It happens at almost every show And in many one on one or group therapy sessions. Someone will come up and ask me "What if I can't be hypnotised?" or tell me"You can't hypnotise me!"
Both interesting questions and demonstrate that many people today are confused about what hypnosis is, and also , what it isn't"
Lets start with what hypnosis is.
It is a state of deep relaxation where the volunteer is so focused on the hypnotist's voice that they simply block everything else out.
Sometimes you can see great insights in simple things.
Take kid's movies for example. Like Kung Fu Panda.
Here is this panda, called Po, who works in a noodle shop.
All the time he is dreaming of being a kung fu master.
When he wakes from his dreams he is just a panda.
And yet, he still dreams of his goal in his waking moments.
An opportunity comes for him to train with the greats.
The turtle grand master decrees him to be the Dragon Warrior.
The trainer puts Po through his paces and discovers that Po is really
If you've watched The Matrix movies you've probably heard that phrase before. But have you ever wondered what that means and how it relates to you?
When we observe people and what they do, we see that they live their lives in accordance with the belief systems that they have installed. The beliefs act like a thermostat. When they get too hot (outperforming to their beliefs) or too cold (underperforming to their beliefs) then the thermostat kicks in and brings them back to normal (whatever they perceive normal to be).
Did you know that each of us is wired differently? That's why...if you are hypnotising someone....you need to be reading all the verbal and non verbal cues to check the wiring. It is calibrating how they work at different levels.
This was vividly demonstrated last Saturday at a private show. I was doing. During the suggestability tests at the beginning of the show one person in particular reacted differently. When doing the finger vice test, rather than her fingers come together they went away quite strongly and very clearly.
Some people say that you will do anything in a trance …. and some say
you will not do in trance what you would not do in your normal
What's the reality? Trick question. We create our own reality. If
you’re a fan of Derren Brown you may have seen him hypnotise a young man
to be an assassin. Even though the young man would probably never
assassinate anyone in his normal conscious state the suggestions were
done in such a way that he was merely shooting a target …not a person.
Quite often I’m asked how does hypnosis work? How do I get inside other people’s minds?
Well the thing is, I don’t “get inside your mind”. What I do is open
up a way for me to speak directly with….your unconscious….mind. So,
don’t worry, I’m not going to go in and take control of your mind. I’m
just going to speak directly to your unconscious mind to help you access
more of your inner resources.
Regardless of the context, be it a show, workshop, therapy or even a
covert hypnosis session, my intent is for you to benefit.
This is an interesting insight today. One of my
teachers used to say to me - utilise the client's trance - be flexible.
What he means is to start working with people where they are. When
someone comes to see a hypnotist/NLPer for some tranceformation work or
to see a show they bring with them not only their map of the world. They
also bring with them whatever they are experiencing that day, that
moment, when they step/sit in front of you.
Last Friday night's
show at Ettalong Bowling Club was no exception.
What's a hypnotic gift? That's a question I'm often asked when I
explain how I finish off one of my comedy hypnosis shows, street
hypnosis demonstrations or "Power Of The Mind" presentations.
key to every show, demonstration or talk is the volunteers that are
participating. Without the volunteers there is no show. So, for me, it's
important to express my appreciation for their trust and support. And
that's a big thing for someone to come up out of the crowd, onto the
stage and trust me as the hypnotists or speaker.
If you've been reading my blogs you may have noticed that I do
hypnosis shows as well as "change" or "transformation work". I've heard
some people say that one takes away from the other BUT I find the
opposite. That doing personal change work complements the show work.
Makes for a more diverse and equipped professional.
In fact I did a
show last night at The King St Brewhouse in Darling Harbour, Sydney.
One of the questions I was asked a lot after the show last night was
this - Why is it that some people seem to go into that hypnotic state
called trance more easily than others?
The world is exactly what we think it is ….and the way we think
about it creates our world. If you’re familiar with the concept of
manifesting or co-creation then you may resonate with what I’m about to
Depending upon what you believe…..you experience the world through
your five senses according to your belief systems. Fascinating to
observe when working with clients or with hypnosis show volunteers. For
example, in a show I may tell volunteers to believe that the number two
does not exist.
